Marie Bouteillon has mentored me for the past three years and prior to that she coached me for a year in preparation for the launch of our French dual language program. Without the continued guidance and basic handholding, we would not have been able to have such a successful program. Marie assisted me in everything from launching our first Open House to deciding on the best program model to suit our community, grant writing, reading resumes and interviewing in French (I’m not bilingual). After the program got off to a great start, she then provided coaching for my teachers. This was by far the most important aspect of being able to sustain a dual language program. Now entering our fourth year, we offer not only a French dual language program but Spanish as well, from grades Pre-K through grade 3. The support that Marie has provided us has been priceless!
Marie possesses exceptional qualities that have contributed to her success. When given opportunities to learn, she embraces them. As a French dual language teacher, she has taken on professional development responsibilities and she has done so with exceptional accomplishments. She has an enormous energy level and is committed to quality instruction and experiences for her students and colleagues. She continuously plans and revises units of study and teaching strategies. She shares her learning and her ideas with teachers and members of the administration. In each of these learning experiences, Marie has proven to be a serious and reflective learner with a great deal of initiative and creativity. Marie has done what has not been done in New York before. She has tailored the Teachers College Reading and Writing Curriculum to create parallel units of study in French. She has also mastered ways in which to balance reading and writing instruction between the child’s mother tongue and second language.
Since my first contact with Marie Bouteillon in 2006, I have watched the development of her engagement with bilingual education and the corresponding phenomenal expansion of French dual language programs in public schools in New York City and surrounding areas. Marie Bouteillon has achieved, and continues to accomplish, a truly amazing feat in broadening intercultural understanding through second language acquisition, starting at the most opportune and crucial moment in peoples' lives: their childhood. Marie is truly one of a kind - an exemplary team member and mentor. She knows no 'work-week', often doing above and beyond what is required, in order to accomplish any task ahead of her in the most outstanding way. I am glad that the French government has recognized Marie's talent in awarding her the prestigious title of Chevalier in the Order of Academic Palms - France's highest recognition for educators. I highly recommend her and am fully confident that her new endeavor will move mountains in the realm of high quality bilingual education. In what has now become a true French Bilingual Revolution Marie has taken the role of precursor, visionary, and natural leader.
I had the great fortune of being Marie’s teaching partner for two years in the French dual language program at PS 58 The Carroll School. Marie was both an exceptional co-teacher and an amazing mentor. As a new teacher embarking on the complex and often overwhelming task of teaching within a dual language program, Marie’s expert guidance was critical to my success. From showing me how to set up a language-rich learning environment and establishing effective classroom routines to developing engaging thematic curriculum and analyzing student data, Marie provided comprehensive support.
In addition to her abilities as a mentor, Marie has an extraordinary talent for creating engaging standards-based curriculum across all grade levels. She draws upon a deep knowledge of bilingual education and learners’ academic, social, and developmental needs to write units of study for all subject areas. I was always amazed by the level of energy and care that Marie brought to the planning process, and I was impressed by the amount of thought she devoted to selecting materials. The best evidence of Marie’s success as a teacher and curriculum designer can be seen in the high levels of enthusiasm, engagement and achievement of the students she works with.
Marie was an excellent professor. She planned her curriculum carefully, then modified it as she learned what her students needed most. She was always prepared for her lessons, providing numerous useful materials. Marie also provided excellent feedback and was quickly responsive outside of class hours.
Being an educator of a wide range of students, Marie has many talents. In each task she undertakes, her dedication is readily apparent. She puts care, passion, and creativity into her work. She is a thoughtful individual who shares her time and expertise generously.
